Jiew Sai Yok, a lost wild elephant calf being cared for at Sai Yok National Park, died peacefully, leaving veterinarians and park officials deeply saddened The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) posted the sad news on its Facebook page, saying the calf, which had been separated from its herd and cared for at Sai Yok National Park in Kanchanaburi province, had passed away. Veterinarians initially suspected acute kidney failure as the cause of death.

Terror of wild elephants has struck again in West Karbi Anglong district. A woman was killed in a sudden elephant attack. The deceased has been identified as Namika Sangma, wife of Krishna Rajbhar, a resident of Bor Matikhola village under the Southern Forest Range and the jurisdiction of Kheroni police station. According to reports, Namika Sangma had gone out with a group of women from Bor Matikhola village to collect water from the Kheroni Kapili river for Bol Bam.

Adivasi Uruwalige Vannila Attho maintained that the ‘Sri Lanka Elephant Conservation Summit 2026’ held under the title ‘Alimankada’ (English meaning Elephant crossing) signifies the much needed area for elephants to live freely sans interference by man. The summit was held on August 1 and 2 at the Jubilee Hall at the University of Peradeniya. The Vedda Leader spoke about the elephants with whom his people have lived and will continue to live for the rest of their lives.

A youth was trampled to death by a wild tusker in Dalangapani village under Ghatagaon police limits of Kendujhar district. The deceased has been identified as Madan Nayak, a resident of the same village. According to reports, a herd of elephants entered the village last evening and caused widespread disturbance. While local residents were trying to drive the elephants away, Nayak was attacked by one of the wild elephants. The family members and villagers rushed injured Nayak to the Ghatagaon Community Health Centre (CHC) for medical aid.

Herds of wild elephants have been venturing out of the forests and roaming rural areas across several districts of Jharkhand, including the capital, Ranchi, creating panic among people and alarm among forest officials. Locals said they are facing the menace in many areas of Ranchi. These elephants, which are straying from the forest, are also becoming victims of accidents. Late Sunday night, a wild elephant fell into an open well in Jariya Mangra Toli village, located in the Lapung block of Ranchi.

People asking for food on roads is a common sight, but have you ever seen an elephant stopping trucks and seeking food? Though it may sound unusual, such an incident was reported from Odisha's Sundargarh district, where a tusker created panic among motorists while searching for food. The incident took place on the Rushibenua Road under Koida Forest Range in Sundargarh. A lone tusker, separated from its herd, was seen blocking the road for hours while looking for food.

Human-elephant conflict in Jhapa has intensified over the years. In the past 16 years, 80 people have lost their lives in attacks by wild elephants. According to the Division Forest Office in Bhadrapur, 28 elephants have also been killed in human-elephant conflicts during the same period. Divisional Forest Officer Nathuni Yadav said that records from June 17, 2010, to July 16, 2026, show that 70 Nepalis and 10 foreign nationals were killed in wild elephant attacks. The data indicates that, on average, five people die each year in elephant attacks, Yadav said.
