The Terengganu Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has relocated a wild elephant found damaging crops in Hulu Besut. The 1.5-tonne male elephant was captured last Friday afternoon near Kampung Felcra Keruak. Director Loo Kean Seong said the relocation operation began at 8 am today and concluded around 1 pm. Sixteen staff from Terengganu Perhilitan and two elephant conservation centres were involved in moving the animal.

A herd of wild elephants has been spotted enjoying a newly dug pond in Khao Yai National Park, signalling that the initiative to prevent the animals from straying and damaging local residents’ properties is yielding tangible results. The herd was seen on Wednesday on video recorded by a camera trap installed near the supplemental water source in the Pha Ta Bak area to observe the animals’ behaviour and assess the effectiveness of the initiative.

In a major move to mitigate human-elephant conflict on forest fringes, the forest department has joined hands with Tata Motors for a pilot initiative to implement an AI-enabled real-time elephant intrusion alert system. The project to provide near real-time alerts on elephant presence and movement is being executed as part of the mission-mode programme on ‘Real-Time Monitoring’, one of the 12 missions by the state government.

The forest ranger of Belaghar was suspended on Tuesday for allegedly trying to hush up the death of an elephant in Baliguda division of Kandhamal. The suspended ranger is Binay Kumar Bisi. On January 5, forest officials had found the carcass of a tusker near Jharapani under Belaghar range. The officials ruled out poaching as both the tusks were found intact on the carcass.

According to Divisional Forest Officer (Territorial) Miss Sushree G, a local villager reported the incident at 4:15 PM, alerting authorities that three elephants from a herd of 18 had accidentally fallen into the pit while moving through the nearby Budido Beat area. The Range Officer Reamal, Deputy Range Officer, Forest Guard of Tinkbir Beat, and the entire forest staff and squads of Reamal Range responded immediately, reaching the spot and beginning the rescue operation without delay.

VDB Secretaries’ Association (VDBSA), RD Block Changpang, has sought the immediate intervention of the minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (EF&CC), CL John, to address the escalating human-elephant conflict (HEC) in Changpang block, Wokha district. In an open letter to minister EF&CC, VDBSA president Sentsudy P.B. Sen Yanthan highlighted that wild elephant menace has become a serious threat, particularly in Chanka Village and across the block under 40 Bhandari Assembly Constituency.
