A major operation to capture a wild elephant in the Channagiri range, Shivamogga Circle, was launched on Monday. The elephant retreated into the hills at Channagiri in Davanagere district, as the operation entered day two, on Tuesday. Despite a heavy deployment of tracking teams and camp elephants, the wild tusker has been successfully evading capture.

A total of 75 wild elephants have been killed as a result of direct human activities during the first seven months of the year, according to the Department of Wildlife Conservation. The Department said 30 elephants were shot dead, while 23 died after coming into contact with illegal electric fences or live wires.

A new study focusing on elephants’ middle ear structure showed that their ears are more sensitive to low-frequency vibrations transmitted through bone than human ears.

Alertness and prompt action by two loco pilots helped save an elephant calf that suddenly wandered onto the railway tracks under the Alipurduar railway division area of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) before daybreak on Tuesday. Around 3.40am, the two pilots were operating a light engine when they noticed the elephant calf moving near the tracks between Banarhat and Carron stations of Jalpaiguri district.

A 55-year-old man was killed in an elephant attack on a forest road near Soyabali forest in the Guali section of Barbil range in Keonjhar district on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Chintamani Patra. He was riding a bike to his workplace at a plant in Kashia around 7.15 am when an elephant emerged from the forest, grabbed him off the moped and dragged him into the forest.
