Dhrube, the male wild elephant notorious for terrorizing settlements in the vicinity of Chitwan National Park (CNP), has started staying inside the park. It has been living inside Chitwan National Park after its tusks were trimmed. Last year on July 4 it killed two members of the same family.

Residents are living in constant fear as these incidents have become more frequent. A wild elephant broke into the house, pushed open the main door of the house and entered. Once inside, it ate stored paddy and rice and damaged household items and furniture

Unlike in Hassan, Kodagu districts where male and female elephants stray to villages and farm fields but in Kanakapura region having Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and Bannerghatta National Park in close vicinity, as many as 41 only male elephants have formed groups comprising 5 to 8 to raid crops easily accessible in farm fields.

A multi-purpose Assistant attached to the Bakamuna Wildlife Office, sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a wild elephant, while repairing an electric fence near the Mahadaththawa Tank in Bakamuna, Polonnaruwa, on Saturday (19). The injured officer has been identified as Lalith Prasanna Kumara Herath.
