A fact-finding committee under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has concluded that the death of a wild elephant named Sido Hoo-pub during a relocation operation resulted from negligence by officials carrying out the mission. The findings have led to a proposal to appoint a disciplinary investigation committee and pursue civil liability proceedings against executives of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, as well as officials involved.

Additionally, officials have set up a nighttime wildlife monitoring team in the Kadambur Forest Range. Following a recent incident in Kadambur where a farmer was killed in an elephant attack, the forest department has intensified monitoring operations in the area.

The Forest Department has intensified measures to mitigate human-elephant conflict in villages surrounding the Parabetta Reserve Forest under the Kadambur Forest Range of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR) by clearing roadside vegetation, installing AI-enabled surveillance cameras and deploying special night patrols. According to the department, elephants frequently leave the forest at night in search of food and water, crossing forest roads and entering nearby patta lands, damaging crops, property and, at times, causing loss of human lives.

A 56-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant that is believed to have strayed from the flood-affected Dibru-Saikhowa National Park into a nearby human settlement in Assam's Tinsukia district, highlighting the growing human-elephant conflict triggered by monsoon flooding. The victim was attacked at around 4:30 am while carrying out her routine morning chores in the courtyard of her house at Na Bormura Miripathar Dhola village.

Man trampled to death by elephant near Dharmapuri

A 36-year-old man, who had been missing for three days, was found trampled to death by a wild elephant near the Kalappampadi forest area in Dharmapuri district. The deceased has been identified as Subramani of Athimarathur village near Pennagaram. Subramani, son of Chinnasamy and his wife Sivabakkiam, was suffering from mental illness. He went missing and family members and relatives searched for him. They found his dead body near a farm well.

Over 5,800 items of ivory, crocodile leather handed in in one year

Over 5,800 items from protected plant and animal species have been handed in to the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) over the past year, from July 2025 to the present. This is significantly more than the same period a year earlier, when the RVO received approximately 1,100 items. According to a spokesperson, it is difficult to say what is causing the increase. “The items are handed in anonymously. It could involve more collectors or traders. Last year, however, we did see many full moving boxes coming in.”

Elephant herd kills man, goes on rampage in 4 West Singhbhum villages

A man was trampled to death by a herd of four elephants in West Singhbhum district. The herd, which went on a rampage across four villages in Jagannathpur block, also damaged houses and standing crops, forest officials said. The deceased was identified as Chandramohan Sinku, 35, a resident of Budhakaman village. Sinku, a father of four, was picked up by an elephant and slammed repeatedly on to the ground. Critically injured, Sinku was taken to the local community health centre, where doctors declared him dead.
