Nineteen elephants died in Tamil Nadu during the first six months of this year, with 18 deaths attributed to natural causes and one to an accident, according to a Daily Thanthi report. Officials said post-mortem and investigation reports for all elephant deaths have been submitted to the Central government as mandated under the elephant conservation programme.

In a bid to restore the natural habitat of elephants and other wild animals, a large-scale bamboo seed ball plantation drive was carried out in the Atei Reserve Forest near Arjunbania village under Kolimati Gram Panchayat in Anandapur Sunday. Led by environmentalist Trilochan Sahoo, the initiative saw the dispersal of 3,500 seed balls across the reserve forest.

A new fleet of vehicles allocated to the Department of Wildlife Conservation to support field operations and Human-Elephant Conflict management was officially handed over today. The Government has approved the procurement of 294 vehicles for officers attached to Range Wildlife Offices and Beat Offices across the country to enhance their day-to-day operations.

Tusks and tush (tusk-like teeth of a female elephant) were found missing from the carcasses of eight of the 14 wild elephants found dead in Malayattoor and Vazhachal forest divisions of Kerala last year. A Special Investigation Team has reported the loss of ivory and tush from the carcasses.

In 2025-26, 80 elephant were electrocutied; 22 were killed in train accidents and 10 died in poaching incidents, making it a total of 112 deaths. In comparison, there were 104 electrocution deaths in 2024-25; 12 through train accidents and 18 poaching deaths – a total of 134. In 2023-24, there were a total of 121 elephant deaths due to these cause with the maximum (94) related to electrocution.

A male elephant was found dead, after being electrocuted by an illegally powered electric fence, in a farm near Sirumugai in Coimbatore district on Monday. Forest Department staff were alerted about the carcass of a tusker in a banana field belonging to R. Kumar in the locality.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has flagged major shortcomings in wildlife conservation and management in West Bengal, with only 10 of the state's 19 Protected Areas having approved Management Plans, severe shortages of frontline staff and just four of 225 wildlife cases resulting in conviction or disposal during the audit period.
