The forest department’s appeal in June to recruit 12 more veterinarians by creating additional posts to attend to cases in the forests and zoos of Karnataka is awaiting clearance by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who also holds the forest, environment and ecology portfolio. “We had placed the proposal before the chief minister, but the matter is yet to come up for discussion. We are seeking his time to present our case to address the requirements,” said a senior forest department official, seeking anonymity.

A mother elephant reportedly remained beside her calf for hours after the young animal was killed in a road collision in Johor, Malaysia. The incident also left a motorist injured after his vehicle plunged into a ravine following the collision. According to Malaysia's Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), the calf died after being struck by a vehicle at around 2.28 am. An elephant, which got stuck between the railway barricades near Arekoppa village in Muggur Range, about 30 km from Kanakapura, was rescued after an intense operation by the forest staff. Villagers alerted the forest department at 6.45 am on Wednesday about an elephant that was stuck in the barricade. Deputy Conservator of Forests, Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, N H Jagannath and subordinate officers arrived at the spot with veterinary doctors Dr Kiran and Dr Girish.

Now, in a major move to reduce human-elephant conflict, the Forest Department has started using thermal drone cameras to track elephant movement, especially during the night.
